In the Karoo area of South Africa, in a town known as Orania, there lives a close-knit community. Some Afrikaner families bought this dilapidated town in 1991. The people of Orania want to realise an independent homeland for Boere-Afrikaners, the descendants of Dutch colonists. According to its founders, the purpose of Orania is preservation of Afrikanerdom that is under serious threat in the new political era of post-Apartheid. Today, Orania is an enclave of about 600 Afrikaner families.
