About Deep Sleep

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Deep Sleep magazine, which we hope will be the first of many. We aim to generate and gather enough material to produce four such issues a year and contributions are invited from any and all photographers with a suitable set of images. (See 'About Deep Sleep' for more information).

None of us could have predicted what a can of worms we would be opening up in attempting a group project like this. We thought it might be 'fun' but the truth is there has been an awful lot of butting heads and pistols at dawn over what this project should be about and the direction it should go in. Some of these questions are, frankly, still to be determined, so it should be noted that this is a work in progress. We have some basic editorial policies along with plenty of high hopes and good intentions, but things will inevitably evolve and change as we go along. That's part of the process when you opt, as we have, for the 'ready, fire, aim' approach.

Inevitably, much of the work for this first issue was already in existence, but we have all been struck by the fortuitous way in which everybody had something appropriate for the theme of 'invisible'. We are particularly pleased to include wonderful stories from guest contributors Vanessa Winship, George Georgiou and Wang Wei, all of which fitted the theme perfectly. From now on, however, it is our intention to favour work that has been specifically inspired by and deliberately shot to fit the theme in question.

Theme for issue two: Alien (submissions now closed) - planned release date: 8th June 2009
Theme for issue three: Dance (submission deadline 1st August 2009)
